Espiritu Santo Island Day Trip

The Sea of Cortez is a complex and unspoiled example of rich and varied marine life in all its intricate form and color.

The preservation of this fragile beauty is of utmost importance. It is our hope that our expeditions will promote an understanding of the ecology of the Sea of Cortez and an interest in its preservation.

Baja Expeditions is proud to promote the use of Mexico’s new Conservation Passport. Designed by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas in 2006, this new program raises funds for the continued protection of the shorelines, inlets, beaches and coves that make this area so extraordinary to visit.

This mandatory access fee of $25 allows you to visit Mexico’s Protected Areas as many times as you wish for an entire year. If you are under 6 or over 60 years of age, you are exempt from this fee. However, we invite you to make a voluntary contribution to help insure the continuation of the important conservation, research and education work occurring in the area.

For our day trips, you may choose to purchase single-day passes for $5 per person per day.

Isla Espiritu Santo

Just 18 miles from La Paz, the 23,383 acre island of Espiritu Santo is the crown jewel in the warm crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Espiritu Santo has the most intact ecosystem in the region—several plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world!

The waters surrounding the island support coral reefs, resident colonies of sea lions at Los Islotes rookery, 500 species of fish and are also frequented by over a dozen species of whales, including the year-round resident finbacks. Because of its warm waters and protected coves, Espiritu Santo provides the perfect place for beginning kayakers and snorkelers to hone their skills.

Los Islotes Sea Lion Rookery

Better known as the "Sea Lion Colony," is an important California sea lion rookery, located just north of Isla Espiritu Santo

Here you'll snorkel with the sea lions and a multitude of tropical fish. With over 400 sea lions living here year round, snorkeling with the pups is a must for every visitor. The pups fly around the divers and tug on fins and snorkels while you are not looking. This is an extraordinary and unforgettable experience. In addition to sea lions, watch for king angelfish, as well as schooling damselfish and surgeonfish that are often milling around.
