Our flexible itinerary facilitates a variety of activities to match your interests and abilities. Because we use a base camp, the schedule can be as active or as relaxing as you choose.
Novices will learn easy-to-master kayaking skills from our expert guides, and soon be paddling three to four hours per day along the western shoreline—exploring caves, rock gardens, hidden inland lagoons and deserted beaches. You'll hike up ochre-colored arroyos to explore cave art, cacti and other amazingly adapted plants. Bird watchers will delight in the antics of pelicans or colorful frigate birds.
Be sure to watch for mobula rays or dolphins leaping out of the water as our skiff speeds you to the best snorkeling spots, where you can swim with sea lions and hundreds of tropical fish. You can also expand your range of experiences with our optional activities, which include SCUBA diving, massage and yoga sessions and even a class in Mexican camp cooking (for an additional fee).
Our friendly crew and added creature comforts—such as cabin-style tents, single and double raised platform beds, comfortable bedding, and Jicara-style showers—make your days and nights in camp effortless. You’ll dine on tasty Mexican food and enjoy happy hour each evening from our cantina as sunny days turn into luminous nights filled with stars.
Activities includedKayaking, Stand-up paddle, hiking and snorkeling. Optional activities include scuba diving, night snorkeling, whale shark searches (depending on the season), and Mexican cooking classes (additional fees apply).
Expedition Day 1La Paz to Espiritu Santo Eco Camp
Please take a taxi to our warehouse to pick-up your snorkeling gear. A morning boat ride takes you to Espiritu Santo Island, designated a global conservation priority by The Nature Conservancy because of its unique biological diversity. Once you arrive at camp, we take care of everything! (L/D)
Days at CampEach day will be a new adventure, with different possible activities. Here's an example of a typical day on the island:
The “early birds” can participate in a morning hike up the ochre- colored canyon to see the first of the many great bird sightings. Rinse off in the historic well built by the shark fishermen of the 20th century.
Around 8 am, we eat a hearty breakfast and we will paddle to La Partida, the isthmus of the volcanic archipelago. After our paddle, the support skiff arrives with our hot lunch and a cooler full of refreshments (cervezas included!).
Our cooks know how to please the active body, beginning with a healthy vegetable soup, then a main course of freshly caught fish prepared in the Veracruz style, accompanied by a salad with fresh greens, and finishing with dessert!
After a short siesta in the shade, we will leave our kayaks and load up in the skiffs to head out to Los Islotes, the northern island and home to hundreds of playful sea lions and species of tropical fish and invertebrates. Los Islotes is sure to thrill even the most experienced snorkelers and divers.
Immediately upon submergence, you will be amazed by the diversity of the marine life. Schools of herring and anchovies pulse through the open waters, parrotfish, surgeon fish, and hawkish graze the coral and sand below, and sea stars and sea urchins dot the rocky underground cliffs.
If conditions permit, snorkel or dive through the passageway; its walls are filled with gorgonians, coral and sea stars, and curious sea lions swim right by your snorkel. You'll emerge feeling like you have visited a sanctuary of highest design.
Enjoy cold refreshments and some snacks as we head back to our kayaks. You choose if you would like to paddle or ride in the skiff back to camp. We have solar showers waiting and happy hour comes often at camp.
The beach becomes a stage set for the dining pelicans, watch as they dive-bomb in unison and miraculously bob up to the surface to swallow their freshly caught fish.
As the sun dips into the sea, we are preparing yet another culinary delight. Special celebrations in Mexico are not complete without the traditional Carne Asada (grilled beef dinner).
Before you stumble to your safari style walk-in tent, take a second to appreciate the never ending array of stars. Picking out the old stand-bys, Orion, the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia become a lot more difficult when every inch of the sky is illuminated. Finally, as you melt into your comfy raised cot, take a moment to relive the day’s adventures and start dreaming of the day to come.
