Also known as Campo Ramon, our catered camp is situated at water’s edge with safari style tents with solar-powered lights, platform beds, and heated showers. The whales are the main attraction but guests rave about our doting staff, always working hard to create delicious meals and make your days and nights comfortable and carefree.
Twice-daily skiff rides deliver you to the whale viewing area, where you'll observe these gentle giants rolling, breaching, and tending their young. Groups gather in the spacious palapa lounge for nightly natural history talks after delicious meals are served
In between whale watching excursions, you can kayak through the labyrinth mangrove estuaries to bird watch in this natural aviary, or comb the peaceful shoreline to discover remnants of the sea.
Expedition Day 1
San Diego to San Ignacio Lagoon
Transfer from your hotel, by comfortable motor coach, to one of three air fields nearSan Diego, having a light snack en route. Our airplane will already be waiting for you, and after a quick baggage inspection, take you to the Lagoon’s landing strip. Flight time is approximately two hours,depending on weather conditions and type of aircraft used.
Our guides will greet you and serve you lunch (sandwiches, fruits, beverages) on your way to the base camp. Upon arrival, an orientation to camp procedures and assignment of tents will leave you fully prepared to begin your adventure.
Time to relax and explore the surroundings or comb the beach before Happy Hour beginning at 5:30 PM, followed by a delicious welcome dinner (Snack, L, D)
Expedition Day 2 to 4
San Ignacio Lagoon Base Camp
On your first full day in camp, you will be fitted with a PFD (life jacket) and waterproof wading boots that you´ll use while in camp. After a short safety briefing, it´s finally time for your first exciting excursion to see the gray whales! Each excursión starts with a short, 10 minute skiff ride into the whale-viewing area of the Lagoon, where we can observe the gray whales spy hopping, breaching and nurturing their Young. Each skiff is a accompanied by an experienced guide and skiff driver, who can point out the many whale behaviors.
After approximately two hours of whale whatching, we return to our camp where you have the opportunity to take a warm, solar heated shower.
Enjoy lunch; then it´s time for a short walk along the beach or a kayaking excursión, or just some relaxing with a book from our camp library.
We´ll try to spot more gray whales and their calves in the Lagoon during our early afternoon excursión. After our return, there will be another opportunity to take a warm water shower or relax before our daily happy hour, wich begins at 5:30 each day.
Both alcoholic and non-alcholic beverages are served, along with tantalizing appetizers, as you watch a breath taking sunset over the Lagoon.
Dinner is buffet-style, and often includes fresh fish and home-made tortillas. After dinner, one of our experienced guides will present a natural history talk to help you learn more about the Baja península, its local people and the marine wildlife of the Lagoon. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to star-gaze while you are here. On your last evening, join our Mexican fiesta farewell dinner, where you can dance to Baja folk songs played by local musicians as you créate another fond memory. (B/L/D daily).
Expedition Day 5
San Ignacio Lagoon to San Diego
After breakfast, we pack and say our last good-byes to San Ignacio Lagoon. In midmorning, our Baja Expeditions bus will transfer you to the landing strip where you will board the airplane to return to the U.S. Once we land, our chartered bus will be waiting to deliver us back to the hotel. The arrival at your Hotel in San Diego is planned for early evening. We recommend that you schedule your return flight for the following morning in case of any delay. (B/L)
A non-refundable 20% deposit is required to reserve space in the camp. Final balance is due at 60 days prior to departure date.
